Considering that Tiwa Savage is the known to wear full on Fendi and uber directional designers like Y-Projects just because, and chain mail ensembles by FANNIE SCHIAVONI on stage, it’s not far fetched to expect far more extravagant lewks for a music video. And her newest video, for her party anthem single “Tiwa’s Vibe,” undeniably delivers all that and more.
The three-minute-long clip finds Savage doing everything from bossing up in a club in form-fitting Burberry with her girl squad (Idia Aisien and Lola OJ) to a cabaret style performance harking back to Hollywood’s golden era in the popular Molly Goddard-esque pink chiffon number from Re Lagos, performing on stage in a Redemption-inspired black mini with exaggerated sleeves from Tubo, singing on a gold ingots and champagne bottle-strewn stage in sexy lingerie from Sshhh Lingerie, a choreographed dance set in Vonne Couture and dancing alone in a double denim and white fur outfit on a beach.
Stylist on this project, Veronica Odeka explained that the sultry vibe was the jumping off point for the fashion direction ‘ ..We wanted the vibe to be all Tiwa and what she embodies : confidence, sexiness and proudly African’ she said.
To fully communicate the multi-faceted nature of Tiwa’s Vibe, the looks in the Clarence Peters directed visuals move deftly between luxe and louche; to tomboyish and casual—like the shot of Savage in the pink tee and shorts —to the more ethereal yet sexually charged moments with the lingerie shots and sheer chiffon in the wind chamber.
They also wanted to make sure the video felt aspirational but relatable, emphasizing the use of Nigerian designers specifically, and combining it with high end brands to make sure there was ‘something for everyone, like the Burberry catsuit that’s on trend now and .. for that very confident girl and of course the denim on denim look with the see through boots to show an everyday trend that’s easy to replicate but still stylish.’ describes stylist Veronica Odeka.
She went on to explain the rationale behind the juxtaposition of some of the looks ‘The tee shirts were paired with ankara bottoms and waist beads of course as a nod to Fela’s Queens and that in a nutshell is Tiwa’s Vibe.’
Tiwa Savage’s ascent to the upper echelons of stardom, is cemented every year with undeniable hits and savvy fashion statements – this in turn means that almost everything she does is met with fanfare from her music, to her fashion and personal choices – every move she makes is scrutinised quite thoroughly, which is why even though this isn’t her most groundbreaking offering, we can only applaud this veritable smorgasbord of bold, overtly feminine and sexual visuals (especially when you consider the often hypocritical miasma of African ‘morality’ which she pointedly ignores throughout the video).
This is a vibe we can definitely get behind – Unapologetic, bold and undeniably Tiwa.
