Having your nails done brings a special kind of joy, but nail polish trends are shifting as women seek options that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also safe and less stressful. While we’ve moved past lacquers that took a long time to dry and didn’t last, acrylic nails, gel polish, and press-on nails have become increasingly popular. However, a new contender has joined the club: BIAB nails.

What are BIAB nails?

BIAB, meaning “Builder in a Bottle,” was developed by the British gel nail polish company, The Gel Bottle. BIAB is a manicure that is thicker than gel polish and conventional lacquer but softer than acrylic. One common issue with acrylic nails is their laborious application process and potential for nail damage, but BIAB avoids these pitfalls. BIAB promotes the growth of longer, natural nails due to the protective layer it forms, which is designed to enhance natural nail development and strength. It can also be used to add length by shaping extensions and infilling nails without removing the entire manicure.

The BIAB application process

After prepping your nails by filing, buffing, removing cuticles, and applying acetone, here are the next steps that differentiate the BIAB application process:

Most BIAB colours can be applied directly to the natural nail. However, lighter shades (like Clear, White, and Milky BIAB) require a layer of rubber base coat. These base coats are then dried under a lamp on a low heat setting.

Unlike thin liquid polishes, BIABs are thicker gels. A generous bead of BIAB will be spread and applied across the nail, pulling the gel away from the cuticle. The goal is to avoid thick buildup around the cuticles and the edge of the nails.

After applying BIAB, the nails are wiped with alcohol to remove any stickiness. The surface is then filed and refined for a smooth, even finish before applying a top coat or another colour. Any dust is removed with a brush.

Most ladies are leaning towards BIAB nails because they offer both aesthetic appeal and help maintain natural nail health. However, it’s worth noting that BIAB works best for people with strong, naturally healthy nails; if nails are too brittle, the application may not last as long.
