South African afropop star Tyla was at the Met Gala for the second time, and this year she was styled by the legendary stylist, Law Roach. After impressive pre-Met Gala looks that dazzled us, she arrived on the Met Gala red carpet looking on theme: “Super Fine; Tailoring Black Style.”

For the Met Gala, Tyla chose a black and white striped dress by Jacquemus, featuring a cinched waist and an oversized men’s shirt worn as a cape.
Her corseted poplin dress, combined with an oversized men’s shirt, featured sequins, crystal pinstripes, irregular embroidery, and delicate crystal fil coupé paid homage to the late Black American style icon and former Vogue’s Editor-at-Large André Leon Talley, who loved pinstripe suits and oversized flowing capes.
Tyla’s hair was a curly ginger pixie cut—a departure from her usual black curls—but it certainly added “va-va-voom” to the look. She didn’t just attend the Met Gala; her choice of stripes and nod to a Black American style icon left a mark with a contemporary interpretation of Black style.
