South African designer Sindiso Khumalo is among the eight emerging designers at the forefront of their careers chosen to advance to the finals for the 2020 LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers. This comes after fellow South African designer Thebe Magugu emerged winner of the 2019 LVMH prize in September 2019.

The final 8 who were narrowed down from 20 brands who were shortlisted in February are from diverse backgrounds including Tokyo and Cape Town. Joining the jury this year will be Virgil Abloh and Rihanna, judging the contenders on the basis of creativity and commitment to creating clothes that are respectful of the environment.

Sindiso Khumalo is a sustainable textile designer based in Cape Town. The eponymous brand is focused on creating modern sustainable textiles with a strong emphasis on African storytelling.

Over the years she has developed a uniquely colourful visual voice, which draws upon her Zulu and Ndebele heritage, and also speaks to the land of Kwazulu Natal, where she is from. Sustainability, craft, and empowerment lie at the heart of the label.
