Glass-shattering will aptly describe Ghanaian makeup artist, educator and entrepreneur, Valerie Lawson’s special masterclass with M.A.C COSMETICS in London this past October.

The Special Master Class is an initiative by UK-based community empowerment organization My Runway Group to provide opportunities to black youth and offer a platform to share ideas.

Having served as the artistic director for an American multinational cosmetics company and founded CVL Beauty, which offers education through master classes and private tutorials, Valerie Lawson is no stranger to makeup masterclasses. Nevertheless, the M.A.C flagship store class this past October in Carnaby London was a historic first for not only Ms Lawson but also the global brand.

It was the first time an African creative was assigned to lead a special masterclass, the first external MUA to have her work published on their front store, and the first time the flagship would exceed its maximum number of attendees.

Students under Ms Valerie Lawson’s tutelage were taken through techniques and skills in skin prep & priming for different skin tones & types, lash application, skin work, product knowledge on eye shadow & pigments etc.

After the 1 hour 30 minutes class, one attendee expressed her deepest appreciation to the organizers. “I enjoyed the class with Valerie, and I thought it was amazing because everything was so detailed,” she pointed out. Another attendee highlighted Valerie’s “patience and step-by-step approach” to teaching the techniques.
