The ‘On Becoming’ author was clad in an all black Bridget Awosika ensemble for New Years Eve.

Toke Makinwa quite often surprises on the red carpet, and this demure look was quite a departure from her more flamboyant looks. The all black look was also understated for the holiday, a day that is usually awash with sequins and dazzle.

The look had several interesting elements. First off, the sheer inserts on the top contrasted nicely  with the ruffle detail just below. Where sheer almost always equals femme fatale or sexpot, on this piece it added a whimsical feel. We also love that the mix of fabric and texture ensured the all-black ensemble was nothing close to boring. Add in the high centre slit and the cut-out detail and we have a potent mix.

She looked edgy but classic, lady-like but yet the look still felt modern. She finished off the look with an elegant chignon, simple jewelry and black strappy sandals with metallic detail.

The below the knee-skimming style was quietly sophisticated and we suspect that this is a new style direction for Toke Makinwa in 2018.
