Akwete, a relic of the olden days, is experiencing a significant resurgence. This fabric, whose name means was gotten from the word akwa Miri meaning “cloth of water” was once worn by the Igbo society for many purposes like towels, ropes and handbags. However, these days, it’s being reimagined in more modern ways.

Funke Akindele‘s styling offers a perfect example: the Akwete material was transformed into a pencil skirt, paired with a striped shirt and a tie. An outfit for traditional purposes is now a contemporary pencil skirt.

We owe thanks to designer Emmy Kasbit for this exquisite pencil skirt, as he is known for his innovative interpretations of Akwete, and this piece on Funke is nothing short of a masterpiece. It’s a fantastic example of how traditional fabrics can be revitalised for the modern wardrobe.
