If your makeup tends to melt off before lunchtime or starts slipping after a few hours, chances are it’s not your makeup products,  it’s your skin prep. Great makeup starts with great skin preparation, and we’re letting you in on the full routine to help your makeup stay fresh, flawless, and longer-lasting.

Step 1: Cleanse (2 minutes)

First things first, you want a clean canvas. Start with a gentle cleanser to wash away excess oil, sweat, or leftover skincare. This helps your products layer better and prevents clogged pores later.

Step 2: Tone (2 minutes)

Next, sweep on a balancing toner. This helps to tighten pores, balance your skin’s pH, and prep your skin to fully absorb the next products you’re going to apply. Don’t skip, it’s the secret to that smooth, makeup-ready base.

Step 3: Hydrate (5 minutes)

Now, it’s time to bring in the hydration. A lightweight serum, especially one with hyaluronic acid, will plump your skin, reduce fine lines, and lock in moisture. Hydrated skin = smoother makeup application.

Step 4: De-Puff & Cool (5 minutes)

This is the game-changer: cooling tools. You could use ice globes or a chilled face roller to calm my skin, reduce puffiness, and minimize any redness. Plus, it helps control oil production, so if you’re prone to mid-day shine, don’t skip this.

Step 5: Moisturize (5 minutes)

Hydration is key, but greasy skin is not the goal. Go for an oil-free or gel-based moisturizer to hydrate your skin without weighing it down or making it slick. This is what creates that balanced base that makeup loves.

Step 6: Sunscreen (Optional if Daytime) (2 minutes)

If you’re prepping for the day, sunscreen is non-negotiable. Choose a lightweight, non-greasy formula that layers beautifully under makeup. Protect your skin without sacrificing your look.

Step 7: Oil-Control Primer (5 minutes)

The MVP of long-wear makeup: a good primer. You should use a long-wear, sweat-resistant, oil-control primer that grips makeup and keeps shine at bay. Focus it on areas where your makeup tends to break up,  usually the T-zone.

Step 8: Let It Set (4 minutes)

Before diving into foundation or concealer, give your skin a few minutes to fully absorb all the layers. Letting it sit helps prevent pilling and makes sure your makeup grips evenly.

Skin prep is basically the foundation of your foundation. Take those extra 20 minutes, and you’ll notice your makeup lasts longer, applies smoother, and looks better. It’s worth it. Try this routine before your next glam moment and thank us later.
