Halima Aden continues to shatter ceilings. The Somali model and anti-islamophobia activist is the first hijab-wearing model to grace the cover of Essence Magazine.

Halima tells the American publication that it is important to be visible and let other girls know that their voices deserve to be heard.

It’s important for me to be visible and to do whatever I can to let girls know that they don’t have to change who they are. I want them to know the world will meet them exactly where they stand.

On the cover, Halima is pretty in a pink look lensed by JD Barnes. Halima has also graced the covers of other high-end magazines including, British Vogue, Sports Illustrated and Allure. Her Essence cover will mark the 50th of the magazine.
