South Sudanese model Adut Akech joins Amy Shark and Angourie Rice in “The Next Gen” March 2019 Issue of Vogue Australia.

Adut has captivated us ever since she made her exclusive debut on Saint Laurent’s Spring 2017 catwalk, she quickly became the legendary Karl Lagerfeld‘s fave – closing Chanel’s haute couture show and featuring in many high-fashion editorials as well as bagging 4 Vogue covers last year.

This new feature which spotlights Australians at their A-game makes her second cover for the magazine.

Inside the magazine, she talks about success, how it feels to be considered the next generation and pressure to maintain a particular level of success in the modeling industry.

On what success actually means to her
I kind of go with the flow. It’s just about doing something that you love, and as long as you’re proud of it and you’re happy with it, then it’s your definition of success.

On being constantly booked and busy
I used to be in the mind-set of keeping busy all the time, then I was like, no, it’s okay to say no, it’s okay to take days off. It took me a while to learn that, but I’m so glad I got to that point, because it’s important to also look after yourself. If you’re not well, you’re not going to perform well, but a lot of people are often fearful of not getting booked again.

That’s very prominent in my industry. I tend to tell a lot of younger models who come in … every time I meet someone who’s 16, I’m like, oh, I used to be 16! I started off very early, I learnt very quickly, but there [are] girls who just get thrown into it and they don’t really know what’s going on inside, so I always try to tell them that it’s okay, success takes time. It might take years, it might take seasons, some people get lucky and others don’t, but you just have to be patient. So I always tell them, it’s okay, this is not your season.
