Woven Threads III is on!

Lagos Fashion Week x Woven Threads III features a physical installation, a series of digital presentations, fashion business series panels and the Lagos Fashion Week Swap Shop.

Here’s a rundown of Day 1:

The season’s edition kicked off yesterday, 22nd April 2022 with a visual presentation of RETHREAD: BEHIND THE THREAD. Founded by Alexa Schempers, Rethread is a sustainable clothing brand selling upcycled, sustainably-made & second-hand pieces. With a primary focus on upcycling, they develop innovative ways to reduce waste in the fashion industry by using what is already in circulation. They source second-hand items such as suits, trench coats, leather jackets, denim and more from thrift & consignment stores and repurpose them into pieces

Following the visual presentation, Lagos Fashion Week hosted the first Fashion Business Series panel themed Renting, Thrifting & Extending Product Life Cycles. Panellists Oyindamola Aleshinloye (Founder, Kadiju), Cleo Marcopoulos  & Natasha Liesner (Co-Founders, Style Rotate) commented on the environmental impacts of more sustainable consumption alternatives such as rental fashion and thrifting as well as how practices like mending and upcycling can help extend the life cycle of a garment.

Day one ended with an exclusive preview of the Woven Threads III physical installation – Untitled at So.nne. Curated by TJ WHO, the installation highlights designers that take into account both environmental and socio-economic sustainable practices that address the issues of landfills and over-consumerism. Participating designers included NKWO, IAMISIGO, Shem Paronelli, Emmy Kasbit, Maliko, Pepperrow, TJWHO, the Green Access 2021 cohort (FIA, Cute-Saint, Desiree Iyama, Kadiju, Lohije), and Eki Kere (formerly House of Ekii).
