If you’ve ever scrolled through Instagram in early May and wondered why your feed is suddenly flooded with celebrities dressed like they just stepped out of a futuristic opera, or a Renaissance dream, chances are, the Met Gala is happening.

But what exactly is it? Who goes? Why is it such a big deal? And what does a theme have to do with anything?

Whether you’re a fashion novice or just curious about the buzz, here’s your beginner’s exposé on the Met Gala fashion’s most glamorous (and secretive) night out.

What Is the Met Gala, Really?

The Met Gala, officially known as the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit, is an annual fundraising gala held to support the Costume Institute in New York City. It’s hosted at the MET Museum and serves as the grand opening of the Institute’s annual fashion exhibit.

Think of it as part high-society fundraiser, part fashion show, part art exhibition, and a lot of spectacle.

Who Hosts It and Why?

The gala is hosted by Vogue magazine’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, who has been the event’s chairperson since 1995. Every year, she chooses a handful of co-chairs, typically made up of celebrities, designers, and cultural icons.

The primary goal? To raise money for the Costume Institute (which is the only department at the MET that funds itself). But it’s also a chance for the fashion industry to flex its creative muscle in front of the world.

What’s the Deal with the Theme?

Every Met Gala has a theme, which aligns with the Costume Institute’s exhibit for the year. Past themes have included:

  • “Camp: Notes on Fashion” (2019): Celebrating exaggeration and theatricality.
  • “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” (2018): Fashion inspired by Catholic iconography.
  • “China: Through the Looking Glass” (2015): Exploring Chinese influence on Western fashion.

The theme sets the tone for how guests are expected to dress. The best-dressed celebrities are the ones who lean into the theme not just who looks “pretty.” Interpretation, risk, and storytelling through clothes are celebrated.

What is 2025’s Theme?

The 2025 Met Gala, set for Monday, May 5, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, embraces the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”. This theme celebrates the rich tradition of Black dandyism and its evolution in fashion history, highlighting how Black individuals have historically used refined tailoring and personal style as forms of self-expression and cultural identity.

The dress code “Tailored for You,” invites guests to interpret the theme through personalized and creative expressions of menswear. Expect to see a range of styles, from zoot suits popularized by jazz musicians in the 1940s and basically  the cultural significance of Black personal style.

Who Gets Invited?

Only about 400-600 guests attend the Met Gala each year. The list includes A-list celebrities, designers, artists, musicians, athletes, tech billionaires, and cultural icons.

You can’t buy a ticket unless you’re approved by Anna Wintour herself, even if you’re a millionaire. Designers also buy tables and invite muses or celebrities to wear their creations. So getting invited is a major sign of relevance in the fashion or culture world.

Tickets reportedly cost over $50,000 per seat, and a table can cost upwards of $300,000. But most guests don’t pay, they’re invited by brands or designers.

What Happens at the Gala?

The part we see – the red carpet – is only a sliver of the event. Once inside, cameras are banned (yes, even celebrities have to put their phones away). The event usually includes:

  • A private cocktail hour where guests tour the Costume Institute’s new exhibit.
  • A formal dinner with exclusive entertainment
  • A lot of fashion networking, art discussion, and very curated mingling.

Because of the secrecy inside, the Met Gala maintains an air of mystique. What happens at the Met stays at the Met (unless someone sneaks a bathroom selfie).

Why Does It Matter So Much?

The Met Gala is more than just a fancy party. It has become a global moment for:

  • Fashion innovation: Designers use the opportunity to debut their most daring, avant-garde creations.
  • Cultural conversation: Themes often touch on politics, identity, history, or art, prompting discussion and critique.
  • Pop culture history: Iconic Met Gala looks go down in fashion history. Think Rihanna’s yellow Guo Pei cape (2015) or Zendaya’s Cinderella dress (2019).

It also sets fashion and beauty trends and showcases the power dynamics of celebrity culture – who got invited, who skipped or who slayed.

Final Thoughts: Why Should You Care?

Even if you’re not a fashion devotee, the Met Gala is a cultural phenomenon. It’s where fashion meets art, celebrity meets storytelling, and money meets mystery. At its best, it’s a celebration of creativity and spectacle. At its worst, it’s opulence run amok but even that says something about our society.

If you’ve ever wanted to see what it looks like when fashion stops playing it safe and turns into full-blown fantasy, the Met Gala is your playground.
