There was a personal significance to Désirée Iyama‘s Spring/Summer 2027 presentation at Lagos Fashion Week. Titled This Is Why, the collection marked ten years in the designer’s creative journey, bringing the label back to the reasons behind its beginnings while exploring new interpretations of its familiar aesthetic.
The collection stayed close to the brand’s feminine design language, but introduced fresh shapes and details across its silhouettes. One of its central ideas was the transformation of thorns into flowers, a visual expression of beauty emerging from difficult experiences. This came through in the use of tulle, organza, ruffles, floral appliqués and sculptural details around the waist and hemline. The palette moved between green, chartreuse, red and white, while polka dots, floral patterns and playful proportions added variety to the presentation.
Ten years is a meaningful milestone for any fashion label, and This Is Why felt like an opportunity for Désirée Iyama to reflect on its journey while looking ahead. Against the backdrop of Lagos Fashion Week’s CRAFTED theme, the collection offered a reminder that a brand’s identity is built over time, through the ideas, techniques and creative decisions that continue to shape its work.
