The StreetStyle Shade to Watch For In 2018 – How To Wear Red.

Ultraviolet may be the Pantone colour of the year, but we are also betting on red this season. Red is such a visceral, vibrant colour – it’s fire, passion and feminine energy. Fashion and film both have always had a love affair with the fiery hue – with almost every famous femme fatale in film from Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? to Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman taking on the sartorial equivalent of a flashing danger sign.

So there were no surprises when it came back to prominence on the February runways, everyone from Alexander McQueen to Valentino featured it in their Fall/Winter shows. The colour continued to make a strong impression with designers –  major splashes of scarlet featured in multiple exits in the SS18 shows from Rich Mnisi to Johanna Ortiz, Tsemaye Binitie to Osman, Y/Projects, Prada, Imad Eduso, Christie Brown, Moofa and Nori Clothing featuring the hue in varying degrees.

So how do you make this color trend your own?  You can go minimal by adding an accessory or maximal, really go for it in top to toe scarlet. Like a classic red lip, there is a red for everyone. You can go darker in burgundy, carmine or oxblood especially in rich velvets like Christie Brown or go all out in crimson or scarlet.

Still not sure how to wear red? Check out visual inspiration from your favourite bloggers and celebrities for ways to wear the colour du jour. What we love most? They ALL eschewed the tired trope of the typical, ‘look at me’ skin-tight, cleavage-baring red dress. We don’t know about you, but that makes us even more excited for this trend in 2018!

Wearing all red even broken up in  layers, can create quite a conundrum for all but the boldest fashion girl. If you absolutely cannot see yourself in all red – try bold accessories  like this lustrous coquelicot feather and satin confection by Prada, or this glossy handbag by Timabee in  traffic-stopping glossy carnelian. Just a touch of the vivid shade will make any outfit impactful.

Suits Away

Channel the subversive appeal of this flame hue in a power suit. 2017 was the year of the power suit and 2018 will see this trend going strong. You can try it in work appropriate brick red, paired with a classic white shirt or blouse.

Alternatively, take it into pure fashion girl territory like Shiona Turini is wont to do with a  crop top, soften the hue with  a  delicate tulle or lace blouse or pair with white sneakers for a casual yet effortless look.

Separates

Want to know how to wear red separates? Keep it modern and feminine in sleek separates, with a pop of print as seen on Agatha of Irony Of Ashi. Pairing it with an athleisure inspired pant like Stella Uzo is another way to wear this arresting colour.
